Matobo Hills Lodge - Matabeleland in Matobo National Park Reviewed by Tamara Oberholster, South Africa on . Beautiful and peacefulWe spent two days at Motobo Hills Lodge and wished we could have stayed longer.
Our chalet was basic but clean. The furnishings are quite dated, but the rondavel is spacious and well maintained. It had an en-suite bathroom with a shower (no bath), tea and coffee making facilities and a ceiling fan.
Meals were taken at a long table in the thatched lapa near the swimming pool. The food was very good and the staff were efficient and helpful. The dinner, which is included in the price, was three delicious courses - great value!
Complimentary filter coffee, tea, Milo and Ricoffy were available throughout the day, and a selection of drinks was available for purchase at the bar.
Neil, the manager, was very helpful in pointing us to the local attractions, including cave paintings away from the main paths, which were much better preserved than the more frequently visited sites. We visited the grave of Cecil John Rhodes and the Shangani Memorial ($4pp for Zimbabweans and $10pp for non-residents, open from 6am to 6pm).
As it was very wet, we didn't see much game as we drove within the park, but we did spot wildebeest, a lone kudu, klipspringers, monkeys, baboons, the occasional impala, and black eagles, as well as a large number of birds.
Matobo Hills Lodge is a place to visit for nature-lovers and those wanting a break from technology (no TVs or cell phone reception). It is also one of the most reasonably priced places we found in Zimbabwe. It offers very good value for money and we would definitely visit again.
The roads can be quite tricky, especially if there's been a lot of rain, and I would not recommend travelling to Motobo Hills Lodge in a sedan. We had a bakkie (pick-up truck) and had no problems, but if you have a 4x4, you can also access some of the lesser travelled game viewing roads.
