Planet Baobab is located along the cracked and cropless landscape on the road between Maun and Francistown, where elephants tear up any tree that dares to raise its head, a large grey hulk looms into sight at the edge of the road. Watch out for the giant anteater on the side of the road.

Follow the side road pointed out by that anteater snout and you will discover the intriguingly named Planet Baobab. This is the baobab capital of the world, where the average age of each tree is 4000 years and beyond and the boundless lunar landscape of the Makgadikgadi salt pans is the size of Switzerland. Planet Baobab is home to one of the largest and coolest pools in the Kalahari and the funkiest bars and restaurant serving interesting and delicious dishes from all across Africa, and we are vegetarian friendly. Just a stone's throw away is the elephant's paddling pool. The elephants and travellers mostly ignore each other.

You can sleep in traditionally styled Bakalanga or Baobab Huts containing en-suite bathrooms with showers; Dome Tents with fully made up stretcher beds or pitch your tent and park your 4x4 in our shady campsite, all with the best ablutions in the bush.

Light your own campfire, or gather round the communal blaze in the 'lelwapa' and enjoy a cool drink, then sling your own 'boerewors' onto the fire or enjoy Planet Baobab's unique Pan-African cuisine. Base yourself here and you can take guided day trips or overnight tours.

Get up close and personal with super-friendly habituated meerkats, tour the local village and learn about Botswana culture, visit a local cattle post and enjoy a delicious traditional lunch, and visit Nxai Xini Pan to seek out ancient stone tools and fossils. Visit the famous Green’s Baobab, do a walk through a baobab forest and much much more.

During the dry season, quad bike across the Makgadikgadi Pans, sleep out under the stars or do a five-night quad bike expedition to the remote and mysterious Kubu Island. During the wet season see the spectacular migration. Host to between 35 to 75000 zebra and wildebeest, Southern Africa’s last and little-known annual migration.

In a continent which is full of surprises, and a place which is full of nothing, Planet Baobab is really something.

Planet Baobab in Gweta Reviewed by Veronique Stheeman, South Africa on . Very disappointing stay While the place is quite quirky, the camp site was too small for 2 cars and 3 tents. We had a booking for 2 camp site, had an email to prove it from SafariNow, but when we arrived, they only had 1 campsite for us. On top of this, they wanted us to pay the full amount while we had the proof of payment saying that we had already paid the full amount. The food was average at the restaurant, and we had to wait a quite a bit. The wifi charge was ludicrous and ridiculous. We will not go back there and will not recommend it.
Planet Baobab in Gweta Reviewed by Wilhelm Strydom, South Africa on . Two Thumbs Up! The whole setup of Planet Baobab has an energetic vibe to it! We camped for 2 nights and we had a awesome time! The camp sites are huge and private and each stand has a ''rondawel" which has electricity. The staff were polite and everything was clean. We were very impressed with the bar area and the pool was a surprise as well! We highly recommend Planet Baobab!
