The newest hotel in the Bluebay Hotels Group, Sultan Sands Island Resort on Zanzibar, opened in July 2008. The resort occupies 25 acres of landscaped gardens. It adjoins its sister resort, Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa. Guests of Sultan Sands may also enjoy the amenities at Bluebay. Both resorts are located on the east coast of the island on the beach of Kiwengwa. It is less than an hour from the Zanzibar International Airport and is easy to get to.

There are 76 rooms at Sultan Sands that are set in single-storey, African-style rondavels. The 56 Pwani Rooms at the resort are built in the garden and face the Indian Ocean. They have a split-level lower sitting area with couch. Each of the units have two decorated rooms with a changing room that leads to the en-suite bathroom.

Décor is traditional and include one king- or two queen-size beds, mosquito netting, verandas, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, satellite color televisions, minibars, hairdryers, safes and telephones. The 20 Bahari Rooms are located on the beach facing the water. These rooms are spaced out around the small swimming pool at the resort.
