Cloud Cottage in Uniondale Reviewed by Samantha Bailey, South Africa on . Beautiful off-grid cottage, gnarly road to get thereLovely off-grid stone cottage on a hillside surrounded by mountain peaks, and warm welcome from Eva and Christopher. The cottage is spacious and beautifully laid out, and the stars at night are spectacular. The cottage has lanterns and candles, gas fridge and stove, fireplace, and donkey for heating water. Not sure if due to recent rains, but the water was the colour of a dirty river, and the donkey takes a while to heat the bath water. The last 11km to cottage is along a dirt road in decent condition except that it's a mountain pass with serious drop offs and only enough room for a single car in many places. Hardly any traffic on this road, but would be difficult for two cars to pass each other, and if road wet from rain, would up the slippery, danger factor. Good to get there in daylight!
Cloud Cottage in Uniondale Reviewed by Mark Copeland, South Africa on . Peace and Quiet at Cloud Cottage
My trip was a solo motorcycle trip from PE to Cloud Cottage and back via Uniondale down the Langkloof. I just needed somewhere to sleep, braai a steak and have a shower, Cloud Cottage did all of this and more.

The surroundings are beautiful, and the cottage cozy, comfortable and warm. I enjoyed reading my book next to the crackling fire. The sky was cloud-covered the night I was there and I have never seen the "black" of night so dark that it actually felt "thick".

You cannot get more off-grid than this; gas fridge, gas stove and paraffin lanterns are all you have other than the fireplace and a donkey to heat your water 30min before you want to shower. And the bed linen was really good quality.

Cloud Cottage is on a working farm and I particularly enjoyed listening to the goats and chickens not far away and watching the horses come down from the hills as the sun was setting. There is also abundant bird life, particularly just before sun-set.

Riding a motorcycle down the dirt pass to Cloud Cottage was also fantastic, but is probably only suited to adventure or dirt bikes.

I will visit again.
