Elundini Backpackers is a newly opened backpacker located only 20 minutes from Hogsback in the Amatola Mountains. Elundini lies in a picturesque, rural Xhosa Village, where travellers can meet and share in the culture.
Elundini offers a completely off-the-grid, eco-experience, with solar geysers and electricity and water from rainwater harvesting. We want our guests to enjoy the overwelming nature, lakes, breathtaking views and most of all, share a common place where the living together and the enriching exchange with the local Xhosa people makes all the difference.
Accommodation is offered in outside rondavels, which are warm in winter and cool and summer, as well as camping facilities. There are no electrical plugs in the rooms and our warm water is provided by solar geysers. All of the rooms share a clean ablution block next to the main building, which is a common area with a bar lounge and a self-catering kitchen. Guests are welcome to make use of the self-catering kitchen or they can join us for meals. A basic breakfast and lunch is available and a set menu is available for dinner every night.
For activities, we rely on the local community. They've set up a list of activities for guests to enjoy so they really get at the homes of the people instead of letting the local people come to the backpackers. Stroll through the village and visit the local shop, the primary school or crèche. Take a hike with our local guides and enjoy the beautiful nature, visit the surrounding villages, or hike all the way to Hogsback.
Follow with an afternoon Xhosa lesson so you can have a basic conversation at the end of the day. This will surprise and impress Xhosa people all over South Africa. Learn how to make your own Xhosa bread and bake it on an open fire with wood that you fetch yourself in the forest and bring back on your head, or go on a horse ride with well-trained horses and enjoy the lovely views. |
