Farm Niedersachsen is rich in tradition and is situated 160 km west of Windhoek below the Us-Pass on the edge of the Namib Desert. The castle-like farmhouse sits on a hilltop and offers a breathtaking panoramic view over the wavy savannah landscape comprising 18535 hectares of farmland, bordered by the distant mountain chains of the Khomas Highland to the east and the Gamsberg Mountain to the south.
Karakul sheep have been bred on Niedersachsen since 1936 and in the good years it was the home to 2000 animals. Beside the guest business and the sale of Karakul pelts, farming with Damara sheep for meat production is another source of income. For the farm household, Jersey cattle and chickens are kept; supplying eggs, milk, cream, cream cheese, butter and yoghurt.
Farm Niedersachsen has been in the family for three generations. Your hosts, Kristin, born in Leipzig Germany, and Volker Ahlert, a Namibian of German origin, have taken over the hospitality business from the parents, Barbara and Klaus Ahlert, and are running it in the same personalised style. Barbara and Klaus have retired on the farm and always ready to lend a helping hand. They too are happy to welcome old acquaintances to Niedersachsen.
The Farm Niedersachsen guest farm offers restful and stimulating vacations in a breathtakingly beautiful natural environment, with farm excursions, hiking, game and bird watching, 4x4 tours through the Namib-Naukluft Park and to the Kuiseb Canyon, as well as spectacular Deep-Sky stargazing for professional astronomers from the farm’s own observatory.
In addition, we offer comfortable accommodation in individually furnished en-suite guest rooms and the best Namibian home-cooked fare with an emphasis on spicy game dishes, homemade dairy products, smoked meat, prickly pear juice and jam.
It is our aim to familiarise our guests with the everyday farming routine. Despite all the travails and hard work, life on the farm depends largely on nature, particularly here on the edge of the Namib Desert. Your hosts, Kristin and Volker, would be delighted to welcome you at Niedersachsen. |
