South African Beach And City Accommodation
Thistledown Country House in Howick
Description |
|
Thistledown Country House is known for its hospitality, gracious accommodation and fine dining. The farmhouse was built in 1937 by Jack Shaw, one of four legendary, unbeaten Springbok polo-playing brothers of that time and lovingly restored by the Maguires.
Jack's vision lives on! A back-drop of pristine indigenous forest , the second largest tract in South Africa - and a view across beautiful gardens to rolling hills and farm land.
Relax on the covered L-shaped veranda, watch for the 129 bird species in the area, the rare Samango monkey and the endangered Karkloof Blue Butterfly. Wander the 20 acre property in search of a variety of fauna and flora, including the crowned guinea fowl, crowned and black eagles and buck.
Or hit the adventure trail! The Midlands Meander starts on your doorstep! Discover arts, crafts and the unusual as well as the handmade/homemade and exotic. Hit the hiking or cycling trail through indigenous forest or take-off on the Karkloof Canopy Tour.
The five double en-suite bedrooms are individually decorated, including many unique pieces. A restored bath from the Imperial Hotel, Pietermartizburg, said to have been used by the Prince of Wales; Andrew Walford basins - one set into a giant Bluegum tree trunk; another bedroom has its own open fireplace being very popular on bracing winter nights!
Bedtime is a pleasure! Crisp white linen, down duvets and large white, wrap-around towels. In-room heating in winter and large sash windows to open in summer.
At every turn you will experience elegant country living at Thistledown. Make sure that you're "home for dinner" at least once during your stay, but remember to book in advance and ask about the fabulous fixed menu for that evening.
Thistledown's dinners are prepared personally by Norma and always start with a beautifully laid table, candlelight and a steaming hot towel, before moving onto a three or four course meal, cosmopolitan in nature, perhaps with a Japanese accent.
A Thistledown dinner is one to remember.
