South African Beach And City Accommodation
Arniston Beach House in Arniston
Description |
|
Arniston Beach House is a charming, neat, fully furnished self-catering holiday home situated in the small village of Arniston, just five minutes’ walk from the white sandy beaches and azure blue ocean.
One of the best kept secrets on the Cape South Coast is the picturesque, fishing village of Arniston or Waenshuiskrans, situated in the Overberg, only 120 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. Arniston is renowned for its unspoilt coastline, exquisite turquoise coloured sea and beautiful beaches.
It was named after the British vessel that was wrecked off the coast in 1815, leaving only six survivors of the 378 on board; the skeleton of the ship can still be seen stranded on the beach. Over the years the wreck’s name has become synonymous with the place name, and today Arniston and Waenhuiskrans are used interchangeably. Locals also know the town as Waenshuiskrans, named after the cave that is large enough to house several ox-wagons and that one could visit in low tide.
The 200-year-old restored fishermen’s village, Kassiesbaai, recognisable for its lime-washed and thatched houses, remains intact and has been declared a National Monument in its entirety. From May to December, the famous Southern Right whales can be seen in the bay to mate and calve in the warm waters.
Arniston Beach House can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests and comprises four bedrooms, four bathrooms, an open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area with an indoor braai. The first and second bedrooms each contain a double bed, the third bedroom contains twin single beds and the fourth bedroom contains bunk beds. All linen is supplied.
The open-pan kitchen, dining room and lounge includes an indoor braai area and leads to two outdoor braai areas, one of which is under cover. The TV room is equipped with a large TV with DStv and a sound system, while the fully equipped kitchen includes all major appliances, cutlery, crockery, dishwasher, an automatic washing machine and a tumble-dryer.
Outdoor activities in the area include swimming or sunbathing on the never-ending beaches, visits to the Waenhuiskrans, fishing for local yellowtail, steenbras, galjoen or musselcracker, or buying the latest catch from the local fishermen, collecting oysters and delicious shellfish from rock pools, and bird-watching for bird lovers. |
