Description
Tankwa Karoo National Park is situated on the southern boundary of the Northern Cape, with the Roggeveld Escarpment in the east, the Cederberg in the west, and Klein Roggeveld Mountains in the south. Just a four-hour drive from Cape Town brings you to this truly unique national park. Situated within the succulent Karoo Biome, the area is renowned for its rare and endemic plant species, rich birdlife, and landscapes that will take your breath away, from the sheer cliffs of the Roggeveld Escarpment to the moonscapes of the Tankwa Desert.

Tankwa Karoo National Park SANParks in Tankwa Karoo National Park Reviewed by Michelle Pentecost, South Africa on . Silence and expanseOne goes to the Tankwa for quiet, for wide open spaces and for stargazing. Be aware that it is a 6 hour drive from Cape Town and not a 4,5hour drive as the Sanparks website suggests: the last 2 hours are all along dirt roads. A vehicle with high clearance is advisable, and be sure that your spare tyre is at the ready. De Zyfer cottage is an old farm cottage - no electricity or cell reception, so everything is candle lit. If you want a hot shower you'll have to get the donkey boiler going. The cottage is nicely appointed, comfortable beds and warm throws. The kitchen has a 2 plate stove top that runs on gas. The fridge runs on solar power and is slightly unreliable. Don't pack meat for your last night, eat it on the first night! The cottage is rustic but good value for money. It is 3km away from the reception, and has a good porch view of the Roggeveld mountains. All in all a good budget holiday for peace and rest.

I feel that it should be made very clear that there is no water, no shade, no toilet facilities, no food to buy, distances to reception is very far from the campsite on the park roads. If this information had been adequately conveyed to us we would have either not booked that particular camping option or gone more prepared.
