Masuku Lodge in Choma

Type:Lodge in Choma
From:USD2316.34 / night (per person sharing)
Description
Masuku Lodge is set in the beautiful, unspoilt bush of Nkanga River Conservation Area. It overlooks a lake and is surrounded by miombo, dambo and thicket. This wide range of habitats supports a high diversity of bird and animal life. The Nkanga River Conservation Area is one of Southern Africa's most important bird areas and is an excellent place to see Zambia's only endemic bird, the Chaplin's Barbet. Masuku is run by Rory McDougall and his partner Dori Glasspool and their two black labradors ‘Jackal and Heidi’.

Accommodation is offered in six attractive thatched rondavels, with twin or double beds, all with en-suite facilities. Each has a veranda where you can sit and enjoy the view of the bush. Meals are taken family style, in the main lodge dining room. There is also a spacious lounge in which to relax. Telephone signal and Wi-Fi are available in main lodge.

The lodge garden is teaming with birds, and depending on the time of the year, sitting in the garden one can spot a large variety of species, some of which are endemic to the region. The Masuku Dam in front of the lodge is equally exciting, especially as you go into the dry season. The Lodge and Dam environs are a great birding spot, with many more birds close by with good easy walks in and around the adjacent thickets, dambo’s and miombo. Birding game drives on open vehicles provide great entertainment.

Herds of kudu, sable, zebra, numerous bush buck, bush pig and warthog wander along the edge of the garden next to the dam both night and day. These visit the dam regularly in the dry season, alongside vervet monkey and chacma baboon. A game drive around the conservancy to Lake Meg, finds the tsessebe, puku, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, eland, waterbuck, reedbuck, impala, common duiker, and Sharpe’s grysbok near the thickets.
