Description
Macachula Beach Camp is an ideal getaway for self-catering, camping, 4x4 and fishing enthusiasts who enjoy adventure, the outdoors and the sea. We are situated on four hectares of a secluded portion of the northern bank of the Pomene Lagoon, 55 km from Massinga. The sea and endless white beaches are 200 m from the camp, directly across the lagoon. The mangrove swamps are easily accessible by boat and can be navigated up to 5 km inland at high tide.

The lodge consists of two self-catering chalets, Casa Flamingo and Casa Kingfisher, each with two double en-suite bedrooms, a kitchen and a pantry, a large open-plan lounge area, and braai facilities overlooking the lagoon. There are two double beds with mosquito nets but guests are requested to bring their own linen or sleeping bags, food, drinks and camping fridges.

There are also five sleeping lapas each with a double bed and a mosquito net, and two of the lapas are en-suite with a toilet and a shower. The ablution block has hot water and there are two large lapas with kitchen and pantry facilities which may be used by people occupying the sleeping lapas or campers, as long as they are booked. The four camping sites are situated under the trees overlooking the lagoon.

Cutlery, crockery and some pots and pans are provided. Solar lighting is provided but guests are advised to bring their own small generators or dual battery systems for camping fridges. We also have two entertainment lapas that have tables, chairs and a kitchen.

The camp has a permanent security guard and is fully serviced. Martin, the camp manager, is also based at the camp and will arrange freshly baked Portuguese rolls, fresh vegetables, firewood, and fresh seafood upon request at a reasonable additional charge. Campers must be fully self-sufficient and have access to the ablution block. Water is pumped from the nearby mangrove river and is generally drinkable, especially if used for tea and coffee and cooking. Guests, however, may prefer to bring their own drinking water.

The last 5 km of the sand road from Massinga is steep and sandy in parts, especially in dry weather and can be challenging for 4x4s and drivers, especially if you are towing a boat or trailer. However, this is all part of the adventure and the view of the lagoon and sea from the top of the hill when you arrive is well worth it. Please be aware that Pomene is a malaria area and that you are required to take the necessary precautions, prophylactics, and mosquito coils, citronella candles and the like.

Paradise Lodge, located within a 10-minute walk along the lagoon, offers a pub, a restaurant and deep sea fishing charters. The nearby Pomene Lodge, five minutes by boat on the lagoon, offers a diving school, a restaurant and pub, a swimming pool, horse riding and quad bike tours. Massinga has a well-stocked market and ice, beer and drinks are available at garages and stores. Otherwise Martin, the camp manager, will advise you. Please note that a detailed information and direction document will be forwarded to guests with confirmed bookings. This is particularly useful if you are a first time traveller in Mozambique or visitor to the Pomene region, and describes useful stop-over points, shopping tips, detailed directions, a Maputo bypass short cut, and what to bring.

Macachula Beach Camp in Pomene Bay Reviewed by Delene Smith, South Africa on . We had a wonderful time. Great spot for a relaxing holiday. Not much to do, so your own entertainment is essential. Swimming is of course wonderful, just wear those shoes for any unforeseen little critta's lurking in the water. Very hot conditions, nights are quite difficult.Martin looked after us and he ensure that we had a daily service and the locals kept bringing bread and fruit for sale. Eric guarded us at night to ensure a safe restful sleep. So a good time was had by all.
Macachula Beach Camp in Pomene Bay Reviewed by Tisha Greyling, Mozambique on . A really lovely breakaway. If you intend to stay for a while. The road is awful - there is a difference between off-road driving and just plain bad roads, you want to travel it only once in and once out! We arrived at night, at main entrance to lodges the guard did not know where Flamingo Cottage was. Took an hour in the dark to find it. Suggest a map with the general area layout (main entrance, other lodges, location of accommodation) be sent in advance to guests or available at main entrance. Beware, it says there is a 'kitchen' but nothing to prepare food on except the dining table, or to cook on except the braai place. Suggest install common two-plate gas burners on a simple locally made wooden table and advise guests to bring own gas. Martin, Mozambican partner and camp manager, extremely helpful and friendly, and deserves support.
